Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree was developed at Defiance College in response to the community identifying the need for baccalaureate prepared nurses. The BSN offers expanded career options for persons in the nursing field by combining technical aspects of nursing with the leadership skills necessary in today’s dynamic healthcare environment. Students at DC have the best of two worlds: outstanding liberal arts and advanced nursing education at Defiance College with top-quality technical education at Northwest State Community College (NSCC).

In DC’s 1+2+1 nursing program, we offer the BSN degree in partnership with NSCC. NSCC is located 14 miles from Defiance College’s campus. The first year is taken at DC. As a freshman, students get the full college experience at Defiance College. Courses taken as a freshman will include pre-professional and liberal arts requirements. During this year, students are required to take the nursing PAX pre-admission exam to be eligible to attend NSCC.

NSCC reserves a limited number of seats for Defiance College students. Those who attain admission complete the associate degree in nursing at NSCC during their sophomore and junior years. During this period, students continue to be DC students and are able to participate in activities and access college resources.

After completing the RN degree requirements, successfully passing the NCLEX-RN Exam, and demonstrating good academic standing at 2.5 GPA or above, the student will return to DC for their senior year. In this year, they complete the advanced major nursing courses and any other credits online needed to fulfill the 120 total credit hours needed for their BSN degree.

Students will work closely with DC faculty to develop critical thinking and decision making skills that will help them work effectively in interpersonal and group situations. Along with incorporating quality and safety practice standards within our curriculum, graduates will have the ability to provide safe, patient-centered and evidence-based care, be effective in a team and collaborative setting, promote quality improvement, and work in a digital informatics world.
